Banksia, White Bay

Just below the western end of the Anzac Bridge in Sydney are several mature Banksia trees. Collecting some of the pods from the ground around the tree’s base, they were then calcined by placing them in a tin can which had a couple of small holes punctured in it to allow just a very small amount of oxygen in, not enough to allow the pods to burn, but also allowing the pressure from within the can to escape. The pods were roasted in a fire for about 4 hours, then once cool were ground, washed to remove any soluble impurities, dried, and then ground again.

Plate: Relief print using Lino block
